– John Lewis –

Get ready for the SUMMER OF THE PEOPLE.
The people are speaking out: It’s now or never.
Stand with us this summer as we continue to demand that the OC Board of Supervisors and the City Anaheim of create the resources we need to end homelessness here.
Stand with us as we fight for justice for people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of homelessness.
Homelessness is a public health issue and a humanitarian crisis in OC, but the county spends none of its own growing budget on housing to end it. Instead, the Board of Supervisors increase funding for the sheriff’s department and increase policing the symptoms of the problem rather than treating the cause of the problem. Meanwhile, our local governments criminalize the necessary act of sleeping in public, even though the county’s dire shortage of affordable housing, services, and program space means that many people literally have nowhere else to live. Mentally and physically disabled, and economically disadvantaged citizens end up in jail—merely for the “crime” of being too poor to afford any kind of home in one of the most expensive housing markets in the nation.
Join us as we take a stand for justice and dignity. Stay tuned for more information on how you can get involved in the following Summer of the People actions and events:
- Meetings with the county CEO, City of Anaheim Council members, and OC board of supervisors to demand action on ending homelessness
- Letter writing campaign
- Rally by Angel Stadium to end the humanitarian crisis of homelessness and stand for justice
- Convening of stakeholders to discuss a housing trust fund/funding mechanism to end homelessness
National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day
Since 1990, the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has sponsored the National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day every year on December 21st, the first day of winter and The Longest Night of the year, to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember those who have died while living without a permanent home. It is now time for us to begin planning our biggest action of the year – National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day in Orange County .
